01 Start Here
Prologue is on the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Download it, sign in with the same Plex account I invited, pick my server, and the Audiobooks library shows up. That's the whole setup.
More at prologue.audio.
Streaming works over cellular and Wi-Fi just like the Plex app, and it never needs a Plex Pass from you — audiobooks and music are exempt from Plex's remote streaming rules.
02 The Player
This is where Prologue earns its keep. Everything below is standard in a proper audiobook app and missing from the regular Plex app:
- Chapters — a real chapter list you can jump around in, rather than scrubbing blindly through a twelve-hour file.
- Playback speed — adjustable, and remembered per book, so a slow narrator doesn't force you to change it back for everything else.
- Voice boost — lifts quiet narration above road noise without making the loud parts painful.
- Bookmarks — drop a marker on a passage worth coming back to.
- Reading list — queue up what you plan to listen to next.
03 The Sleep Timer
Worth its own section, because it's better than most. As well as a plain countdown, you can tell it to stop at:
- End of the current chapter — so you don't wake up nine chapters downstream.
- End of the next chapter — one more, then lights out.
- End of a chapter you pick — for when you know roughly how long you'll last.
04 Car, Watch & Siri
Prologue supports CarPlay, and unlike most audiobook apps it gives you the full chapter list on the car screen rather than just play and pause.
On Apple Watch you get playback and skip controls on your wrist. There's also Siri support and home screen widgets for getting back into whatever you're partway through.
05 Keeping Your Place
Your position syncs through my Plex server, so you can listen on your phone in the car, then pick up on your iPad at home exactly where you stopped. Nothing to press — it just tracks.
Prologue also keeps playback history, along with listening stats and streaks if you're the sort of person who enjoys that.
06 What's Free, What Isn't
Prologue is a free download, and streaming from my server is free — you can use it indefinitely without paying anything. There's a one-time in-app purchase that unlocks a couple of extras:
✅ Free
Streaming, chapters, playback speed, voice boost, sleep timer, bookmarks, CarPlay and Siri.
🔑 One-time purchase
Offline downloads for flights and dead zones, plus collections. Apple Watch support is priced separately.
Prices move around, so check the App Store for the current figure. It's a one-off, not a subscription — and it goes to the developer, not to me.
07 On Android?
Prologue is iPhone-only. On Android, the equivalent is Chronicle Epilogue — free, open source, actively maintained, and built specifically for Plex. It covers the essentials: progress syncing, playback speed, sleep timer and Android Auto.
